About this event

“Optic Jukebox,” music-themed art by Thia Rolfes and Sara Ann Cavic, is on display in the ArtiFactory Gallery through November. The exhibit showcases Thia’s toy-like automata, kinetic artworks that feature musicians, singers, or dancers. A largely self-taught artist who designed jewelry and did beadwork when she lived in the Southwest, Thia is also a photographer, painter, and collage artist. Some of her work in those forms is also in the show.

Sara grew up near Walden Pond and her paintings reflect the influence of Henry David Thoreau and the American Transcendentalists. Her work is grounded in the observation of nature, and at times investigates the complicated intersection of nature and (human) culture. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts.

Both artists play musical instruments, and to complement Thia’s musical works, Sara created new work and selected older pieces on musical themes. Because music is central in both their lives, it offers “an organic way to connect our work.”

There will be an opening reception on Friday, Nov.6, from 6-8 p.m. The gallery is free and open to the public Wednesday and Friday 4-6 p.m. and Saturday 1-3 p.m. or by appointment on the website (artifactory.artsiowacity.org).
