About this event

Three years after his International Writers Program residency at the University of Iowa, Dutch-Surinamese author Raoul de Jong returns to Iowa City with his award-winning novel Jaguarman. He will share excerpts and insights from the book, followed by a conversation moderated by myself. A book signing and reception will close the evening.

About Jaguarman:

Jaguarman begins when its narrator, at twenty-eight, meets his Surinamese father for the first time and hears of an ancestor, a medicine man said to have taken the form of a jaguar. Haunted by the story, he sets out for Suriname to follow the ancestor’s path. What unfolds is part adventure, part family quest, and part love letter to a homeland he is only beginning to know. The English translation by John R.J. Eyck was published by HopeRoad in May 2026.

A little about Raoul :

Raoul de Jong was born in Rotterdam in 1984. He is the author of eight books, and Jaguarman was shortlisted for the European Union Prize for Literature and the Libris Literature Prize.
