- ➤ Kim Guardado is promoted to Chief Operating Officer at HACAP starting this month, after 24 years as Food Reservoir Director who helped fight hunger and improve community health for local families. She succeeds her previous role as she takes on more leadership for the program. KCRG

- ➤ Uptown Coffee Company, a Marion favorite, will open a new location at NewBo City Market the week of Jan. 19 pending health inspections, replacing Roasters. The cafe will serve coffee, espresso, tea and basic breakfast items before expanding its menu later. The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A new tax deduction gives Iowa seniors 65 and older an extra tax break on their returns this season and each year through 2028, according to IRS spokeswoman Stacy Engle. The extra deduction amounts to $6,000 for an individual and $12,000 for a married couple (reducing taxable Social Security benefits). Radio Iowa

- ➤ Iowa Health and Human Services reported very high flu cases last week, with 24.3% of emergency room visits due to acute respiratory syndrome in the early days of January. COVID-19 and RSV levels remained moderate, based on the latest figures. CBS 2 Iowa
- ➤ The Linn County Mental Health Access Center has introduced a withdrawal management program (managed by Abbe Community Mental Health Center) to help adults with alcohol and opioid withdrawal. Assessments are available any time, with admissions on Mondays and Tuesdays and walk-ins welcome. KWWL
