  • Richard Green has taken over as President and Publisher at the Cedar Rapids Gazette, overseeing 11 community papers acquired by Adams Multimedia. He began his role on Monday after Kelly Homewood retired after 26 years of service.  KCRG

  • Independent theaters are keeping movie nights affordable with tickets as low as $5 at Palace Theater in Vinton and budget-friendly screenings at Collins Road Theater. Local owners stress the value of community & the unique experience of watching films on the big screen.  KCRG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Eastern Iowa Airport set a record in 2025 with over 1.6 million travelers as a 6 percent rise boosted airline investments — prompting plans for future upgrades. Beginning next year, the airport will launch a $180 million capital improvement plan to upgrade the airfield and passenger facilities.  The Gazette

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids experts from Tanager recommend that parents adjust conversations about violent news for their children by listening first and tailoring language based on age.   • Amal Eltayib, a 17-year-old City High student, has presented cancer research at national science fairs and started a nonprofit to supply local schools with science equipment. She also codes for fun and works on projects helping those fleeing violence (including developing a fingerprint device) while inspiring others with her achievements.  KCRG
  • The Cedar Rapids school board saw two consolidation proposals that could close a high school or shift to a model serving 5th through 8th grade to cut at least ($6 million) from the district's budget. The board will review feedback on Feb. 9 and decide by April.  The Gazette

  • Residents at the Imperial Apartment Complex have been without heat for over a week and temperatures remain below code at Mount Vernon.   • The Iowa women’s basketball team was named the USBWA National Team of the Week Tuesday after beating ranked teams — Michigan State, Maryland, and Ohio State — and climbing to No. 8; they will face No. 2 UCLA on Sunday to contest the Big Ten top spot.  KCRG
  • University of Iowa football announced its 2026-27 conference schedule on Tuesday, with the Hawkeyes opening at home against Northern Illinois on Sept. 5 and hosting seven games including a matchup with the Cyclones on Sept. 12.  KCRG
