  • Cedar Valley Humane Society will close for two weeks starting Feb. 2 while moving to a new adoption facility supported by Graham Construction + OPN Architects and contractors. Adoptions will continue by appointment as its current shelter is renovated into a stray holding and service area by year’s end.  KWWL
  • Louis and Irene Winkelbauer celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary (a diamond jubilee) after being married on Jan. 25 in Randolph, Nebraska; they spent most of their lives farming in Iowa, raising four children, nine grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, and Irene still plays the piano she has loved since childhood.  KCCI

  • The Blue Dane, an upscale neighborhood sports bar, will open by Feb. 14 in Kingston Village at The Metropolitan building (450 First St. SW, Unit 101) with elevated comfort food and quality drinks, replacing Quinton's Bar and Deli that moved after a sale in November.  The Gazette

  • Comedian Tim Sullivan will celebrate 30 years of stand-up with a performance featuring new and classic material at the Olympic South Side Theater. The show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31 with tickets from $24 to $46.  The Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids City Council approved a tax exemption for Plumb Supply's $15.2M expansion to build a 92,000 sqft warehouse at 4690 Bowling St. SW, which will maintain 30 jobs and add seven more. Construction will begin this spring and finish next year + the project aims to enhance business growth.  The Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Iowans are reminded to donate to the Fish and Wildlife Fund (Chickadee Check-off on Line 21 of Form 10-40) when filing their tax returns. Wildlife biologist Stephanie Shepherd urges taxpayers to consider even a one-dollar donation to help fund habitat improvements for non-game species.  Radio Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids City Council approved a $2.79 million plan to revitalize the Tree of Five Seasons Park and improve the nearby roadway (First Street NE), creating a plaza, walking paths, and lighting to enhance the downtown riverfront.   • Iowa Department of Revenue provides online tools and a 24/7 virtual assistant (GovConnect Iowa) to help residents file tax returns as processing began Jan. 26 with returns due Apr. 30.  KCCI
