CULTURE NEWS

  • The country band Alabama will perform at Alliant Energy Powerhouse Arena on Sunday, April 19. A special presale runs Thursday, Feb. 12 (10 a.m. to noon) and general ticket sales begin on Friday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m.  KDAT
  • Jefferson Starship will bring its Runaway Tour to McGrath Amphitheatre on Sept. 25 — tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Alabama will perform at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse on Sunday, April 19 at 7 p.m. — special guest Exile will open the show and tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 13 online.  CBS 2 Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new bill would require Iowa public schools to adopt dress code rules that promote hygiene, neatness and modesty, including during extracurricular activities. Introduced by Rep. Samantha Fett (R-Carlisle), it sets minimum standards while some educators worry that harsher penalties could hurt low-income students.  Radio Iowa
  • The Cedar Rapids school board voted to continue studying intermediate and 5—8 school models that may cut six elementary schools to save $6 million a year, leaving Johnson STEAM Academy untouched. Final recommendations will be made in April and changes will begin in fall 2027.  The Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • QTS partnered with local nonprofit Monarch Research to plant 4,000 native trees including oak trees to boost Cedar Rapids’ urban canopy as part of a five-year plan to plant 20,000 trees. The project supports the city’s ReLeaf Cedar Rapids program + strengthens the community’s tree cover after the 2020 derecho.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Linn County Planning & Zoning Commission will review proposed rules that require gas power plants to be built 2.25 miles from homes and limit noise to 55 dBA. The meeting will take place on February 16, and residents are invited to share their feedback.  KCRG
  • Cedar Rapids officials say the I-380 southbound ramp to Wright Brothers Boulevard closes overnight from 10:00 p.m. Wednesday to 6:00 a.m. Thursday — a detour via Exit 10, 120 Street NW will guide traffic back north to Exit 13.  KCRG
  • A bill will expand access to subacute mental health services outside hospitals after moving through a House subcommittee — advocate Mary Neubauer said the changes would remove limits on treatment duration and increase insurance coverage despite opposition from some companies.  Radio Iowa

  • Harlem Globetrotters will perform at Alliant Energy PowerHouse on Friday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. The 100-year-old team, featuring Lucious 'Too Tall' Winston, will deliver an interactive game that blends humor + skilled play for families in Cedar Rapids.  The Gazette
  • KWQC’s Joey Donia and Kevin Kohr attended a curling lesson at Cedar Rapids Curling Club as the Winter Olympics unfold. The club will host learn-to-curl events in February, March and April to help locals try the sport.  KCRG
