  • Fireside Tavern in downtown Cedar Rapids reopened in January under new ownership and now operates as FST Soul Food African Sports Bar — serving pan-African and American soul food staples. It now offers regular dining hours from Thursday through Sunday.  KDAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Champion Irish dancer Catherine Cross will perform at Cedar Falls' Oster Regent Theatre as part of the Iowa Irish Fest Winter Concert Series. She will appear with Socks in the Frying Pan on Friday, Feb. 20 and with Screaming Orphans on Saturday, March 7.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa lawmakers are set to update state drilling laws to regulate hydrogen extraction from the Midcontinent Rift after exploration by Koloma shows promise near Vincent dome (an area known for hydrogen-rich rock formations).  KCRG
  • Iowa lawmakers are sponsoring legislation to rename two VA facilities—one in Des Moines and one in Marshalltown—to honor Staff Sgt Edgar Torres-Tovar and Staff Sgt William Howard, who were killed while serving in Syria. The Iowa National Guard Heroes Commemoration Act will ensure their lasting legacy.  Radio Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hundreds of Iowa schools reported 10% or higher absenteeism due to respiratory symptoms during the week ending Feb. 7 (per Iowa Health and Human Services), while testing showed sustained influenza activity along with elevated COVID-19 and RSV in clinics and labs.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Gov. Reynolds and state health leaders have launched an $8M Health Care Professional Incentive Program to recruit and retain providers in underserved areas (targeting nine professions in 36 counties). Eligible participants may receive incentives for full- or part-time work; applications are due by March 31.  KCRG
  • Nearly 100 Iowa schools saw over 10% student absences last week as RSV surged along with high flu and COVID-19 levels, with nine schools in Linn County affected — Cedar Rapids residents should be aware of the rising illness trend.  KCRG
  • University of Iowa researchers have developed a tool called CAMSA that uses data to show cancer rates by zip code (including in Cedar Rapids) to help officials and residents understand local health risks. Officials update the tool each year and plan to work with other states soon.  KCRG
