ECONOMY NEWS

  • The union representing Whirlpool workers in Cedar Rapids says the company will lay off 350 workers at its Amana plant on March 9 as it shifts investment to Mexico, and union leaders are meeting with local lawmakers to ask tough questions.  KCRG
  • Gas prices in Iowa rose by a dime per gallon over the past week amid concerns over tensions in the Persian Gulf, according to an AAA spokesperson. Prices remained below the national average, with Iowa at $2.63 compared to $2.98 nationally.  Radio Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids city leaders are reviewing a proposed FY27 budget that may set aside funds to donate $500,000 for the new 13,000 sqft Our Place Center for Older Adults at Horizons (819 Fifth St. SE). Construction will begin this spring with completion expected in early 2027.  The Gazette

HEALTH NEWS

  • UnityPoint Health honors 38 nurses as 2026 Great Iowa Nurses, including a record 21 from Cedar Rapids. The award will be presented during a virtual ceremony this spring to recognize their outstanding care and dedication to patients.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • St. Luke’s Health Care Foundation will award 50 AEDs to eligible community organizations including nonprofits, government bodies, and schools in Cedar Rapids (and surrounding counties) through its Heart Saver Grant program.
