  • Horizons began renovating a Cedar Rapids building on Friday to create a new senior center called Our Place. The facility will include a cafe, fitness studio, and more, with construction expected to last about a year as local seniors eagerly anticipate the upgrade.  KCRG
  • AAA is activating its Tow to Go program for St. Patrick’s Day to help prevent impaired driving and offer free rides from 6 p.m. Monday, March 16 through 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 18 across Iowa, with tow service available for drivers and their vehicles up to 10 miles.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa lawmakers introduced HF 2133 (a bill that would classify kratom as a hallucinogenic Schedule I substance) amid safety and addiction concerns. If passed, possession will carry penalties from a serious misdemeanor to a felony and has sparked debate among health experts and kratom users.  CBS 2 Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • RSV was rated very high in Iowa during March 1-7, with influenza at high and COVID-19 at low, according to the respiratory report — positive RSV tests increased by about 2 percent and 34 schools reported 10 percent or more students sick in nine eastern counties.  KCRG
  • Researchers in Cedar Rapids are studying if GLP-1 medications like Ozempic can reduce addiction cravings by acting on the brain's reward system. Experts say clinical trials must prove the drugs' long-term safety (current treatments remain essential).  CBS 2 Iowa
