Good morning, Cedar Rapids. Here's your local news at a glance for Monday, the 17th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Downtown Cedar Rapids prepares for the 50th SaPaDaPaSo St. Patrick's Day Parade as community groups, marching bands and festive floats take part starting at (1 p.m.). Residents should plan for road closures and increased traffic as the city fills with green on Monday.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Chain Reaction Bike Hub opened in May 2024 in Cedar Rapids to provide affordable bikes to community members and has sold 114 bikes and given away about 170 free bikes — using programs like Earn-a-Bike and Cycle for Change. The nonprofit will host a bike swap on March 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1010 Third Ave. SW — and it plans to expand bike repair classes to reach more neighborhoods.  The Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers from Iowa State University and the Army Corps of Engineers lowered Lake Red Rock's water by about 1.5 feet—exposing hundreds of acres of mudflats so pectoral sandpipers can feed better. They tracked the birds in 2023 and 2024 and plan to adjust water levels yearly—helping the shorebirds complete their long migrations.  The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A possible water break on Collins Road is causing lane closures and traffic at the busy intersection of Collins Rd. and C Ave.—City officials have been contacted and will update the public as more details become available.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • The Cedar Rapids City Council approved a new plan for almost 60 acres along First Avenue — a move to fix empty stores and safety issues — that will bring new business partnerships. City staff said the plan will join the larger EnvisionCR strategy and that further improvements are set to begin soon.  The Gazette
  • Cedar Rapids Police Department is offering a ten-dollar Uber voucher for safe rides on St. Patrick’s Day, valid until March 18—residents can scan a QR code on the department's Facebook page to get it.  KCRG
  • Iowa lawmakers are reviewing a bill that would let barbers and hairstylists earn a cosmetology license through an apprenticeship program—this change would have apprentices receive only two hours of training on Iowa rules instead of full-time schooling. The measure is set for debate today and has raised concerns that lowering traditional standards could affect service quality.  KCRG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Doctor Thomas Schroeder has been honored with the 9 Who Care Award for volunteering at the Community Health Free Clinic—where he treats patients for free and helps over 4,000 people a year. He works four days a month to serve working poor families who lack insurance and other benefits.  KCRG
