  • Harold's Chicken reopened in February on the southwest side near Wawa Caribbean at a site that once housed Highway 30 Diner. Co-owners Vaosa Omeara and Tierra Long brought the Chicago favorite back with a simple menu and fresh food—this is the only Harold’s Chicken in Cedar Rapids since 2017—while planning a drive-thru and delivery service as they grow.  The Gazette

CRIME NEWS

  • A mother remembered how her 16-year-old son Michael McCune was fatally shot eight times in the entryway of an apartment building in Cedar Rapids a few minutes after leaving home in February, and on Tuesday Devin Gardner—a 19-year-old from Maquoketa who admitted driving the group—received a 32-year prison sentence run consecutively.  The Gazette

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A consultant from Stantec Consulting was hired after a $318,000 contract was approved to study how to remove a low head dam and improve the area at Palisades Kepler State Park, according to DNR River Programs Coordinator Nate Hoogeveen. He said the study will balance recreation access with protecting spawning habitats for sturgeon and paddlefish along the Cedar River system — a key environmental priority.  Radio Iowa

  • Linn County health officials are urging residents to check their measles vaccination status as U.S. cases have already passed totals from 2024 and two unvaccinated people died in Texas and New Mexico. Officials stressed the need for vaccination since Iowa has had no cases since 2019.  KCRG

  • A California-based buyer purchased Northland Square on Collins Road for $17.5 million, a popular shopping center that has been fully occupied since 1994. Hanley Investment Group arranged the sale on behalf of the previous owners and most stores such as TJ Maxx, Barnes and Noble, Office Max, Old Navy, Famous Footwear and Hallmark will continue operating under the new ownership.  KDAT
