  • On Sunday, July 27, Cedar Rapids will host Gathered & Grown: A Feast of Five Seasons to mark the 20th season of the downtown Farmers Market and the 10th year of Market After Dark. The event will have a cocktail hour at 6:00 p.m. and dinner at 7:00 p.m. at 2nd Street SE — chefs from Cobble Hill will prepare a meal using local ingredients and live music will be featured.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Cedar Rapids will host its first Street Food Festival at Ellis Park on Saturday, July 19th from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.—the free event will feature local food trucks, live music, face painting, and giveaways while 10% of sales are donated to local homeless shelters.  KDAT

  • Fong's Pizza opened its new East Village location on Tuesday along East Court Avenue. The new restaurant (more than double the size of its old venue) now offers the familiar favorites alongside new dishes and improved parking.  KCCI
  • Fun Not Fancy opened its newest restaurant, The Bar, at 1100 First St. SW after a brief soft opening at the end of March and an official launch on April 1. Owners Justin Zehr, Tim Oathout and Cale Henderson said they intend to offer affordable burgers, bar fare and a true dive bar vibe—designed to honor local history and neighborhood comfort.  The Gazette

  • A criminal complaint states that 24-year-old Daniel Doyen attacked an 80-year-old woman while she was pushing her walker on the 1100 block of B Avenue NW in Cedar Rapids—he struck her head several times, causing bruises and cuts, then fled toward a home on the 1100 block of C Avenue NW.  KCRG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The USDA is ending two local food programs—Local Food Purchase Assistance and Local Food for Schools—that helped eastern Iowa farmers earn a total of $360,000 this month. Buffalo Ridge Orchard owner Emma Johnson said her farm must now find a new market for 50,000 pounds of apples as local food prices are expected to rise.  Radio Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Unsanitary conditions forced a Cedar Rapids family to leave their home after city inspections found clogged pipes and sewage issues at a property owned by landlord Brigitte Toingar, who runs her rentals through three LLCs—EDE LLC, 5 J Investments LLC, and Ndouba Kingdom LLC. The city has fined her over $20,000, ordered repairs at 10 properties, and scheduled new court dates while tenants and local business owners remain affected.  KCRG
