ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ On Wednesday night just before 9:20 p.m., a car driven by Hamzah Altaweel age 18 failed to stop at a stop sign on Mabie Road east of Wright Brothers Boulevard near Ely and rolled onto its roof, injuring him and a passenger age 20 who were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries while Altaweel faces charges for failure to maintain control, no insurance and disobeying a traffic control device. - ➤ Scoops Creamery has opened its new ice cream stand at Lindale Mall in Cedar Rapids—located across from Pretzelmaker near the escalator—and offers a wide range of custom flavors, mix-ins, and frozen treats such as smoothies, shakes, and frappes. The shop is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. KDAT

- ➤ Former Iowa Supreme Court Justice Mark McCormick died at 91 on Sunday. He served on the court from April 12 until January 31. KCRG
- ➤ Iowa’s new hands‑free phone law—signed by Governor Kim Reynolds on April 2nd after a Senate vote on March 18—will ban drivers from holding electronic devices while driving starting July 1st; for six months, officials will issue warnings before a $100 fine takes effect on January 1st. KDAT
- ➤ Drivers in downtown Cedar Rapids received tow notices because a computer glitch at a mailing contractor sent out erroneous letters for unpaid parking fines, but a parking authority spokesperson said no car will be towed. Jon Rouse, ParkCR's general manager, explained towing happens only in extreme cases (the error affected multiple notices) and apologized for the mix-up. KDAT

- ➤ Brigitte Toingar owns three LLCs in Cedar Rapids that include code-violating properties which forced families to leave uninhabitable units on Aossey Lane on March 27 and Americus Drive on April 2. Two LLCs are inactive and a registered agent for her third business is set to resign soon—Toingar is scheduled for court on April 21 and trial on May 22 along with contempt hearings on June 2. KCRG

- ➤ The 52nd edition of RAGBRAI will take riders on a seven-day bike ride that briefly crosses into Minnesota at Brown Park South on July 21 — the first time the ride leaves Iowa. Organizers said riders will quickly return to Iowa as they travel from Milford to Estherville with various themed stops along the route. KCCI
