BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ UScellular is set to lay off about 4,100 employees nationwide starting on June 2 due to its merger with T-Mobile. The layoffs will affect staff in Cedar Rapids, Coralville and Iowa City from corporate stores and a call center — most will be offered similar wages and benefits. KDAT
- ➤ Munchi Mochi opened in March near Kirkwood Community College, offering new mochi doughnuts that are chewier and crispier plus have half the calories of traditional doughnuts. The shop is run by 20-year-old Kira Anthony, her mother Kim Westland, and Atlas Hargrove, and it sells doughnuts for $4 and boba tea in milk and green tea flavors. The Gazette

- ➤ Authorities charged 35-year-old Deavin Baker of Georgia in connection with an alleged check forgery scheme in eastern Iowa — investigators found forged checks in a Cedar Rapids vacation rental where the scheme used stolen bank data to print checks in July 2023, and Baker along with Mikal McCarty now face forgery, theft, and conspiracy charges. - ➤ Representative Ray Bubba Sorensen sponsored a bill to allow catfish noodling in Iowa lakes and rivers after families said they want to try catching catfish with their bare hands. - ➤ Residents reported that the mysterious tower on the Northeast side was taken down Sunday night after repeated warnings to property owners Brigitte and Esaie Toingar to remove it for lacking a permit.
