BUSINESS NEWS

  • DISH Network removed KCRG and other Gray Media stations from its service over a month ago after giving extensions during severe weather and major events like the NFL playoffs — Gray Media now says DISH rejects proposals and adds demands. DISH customers are urged to push for the channel's return.  KCRG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The U.S.D.A. crop report showed wet weather slowed planting + only 1% of corn was planted by Sunday compared to 2% last year + no soybeans were planted due to fewer workable days in southern fields while drier conditions held in the northwest.  Radio Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday afternoon, thunderstorms formed near Highway 20 and east of Highway 63, producing hail from quarters to baseball size and a few tornadoes with winds up to 165 mph; the severe weather diminished by 9 p.m.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Iowa Religious Freedom Day took place early this morning at the Iowa Capitol, co-sponsored by local religious groups with keynote remarks from Micah Fries (of the Multi-Faith Neighbors Network) and closing words from Governor Kim Reynolds, who affirmed the state's commitment to equal religious practice for all.  Radio Iowa
  • A public meeting is planned Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. in the Whipple Auditorium at Cedar Rapids Library to discuss the potential reopening of the Duane Arnold nuclear power plant. An NRC panel (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) will explain the proposal and answer public questions.  KCRG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Iowa lawmakers passed a bill today that requires parental consent for HPV and hepatitis B vaccines, changing current rules that let minors receive STD-related health care without approval (legislators note the governor’s signature is still needed).  Radio Iowa

  • Local restaurants and community venues are hosting Mother's Day brunches and activities across Eastern Iowa from May 7 to May 10—Cedar Rapids spots require advance reservations as unique experiences like brunch buffets, DIY sessions and live music brighten the weekend.  KDAT
