BUSINESS NEWS

  • NewBo City Market’s expansion project restarted after a pause and will break ground this fall after federal funds were released on April 10th; the official groundbreaking is set for September 1st—The Next Level Local project will add a second level, new shop spaces, a grocery store, a new bar, an indoor stage and more while working to close a $1.25 million funding gap.  KDAT

CRIME NEWS

  • A 30-year-old Cedar Rapids woman accused of fatally stabbing the father of her child in January 2024 took a plea deal for voluntary manslaughter and willful injury causing serious injury on Tuesday morning, and her sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 13.  KCRG
  • Police are responding to an active scene in southeast Cedar Rapids—shots were fired and property damage occurred near the 1500 block of Bever Avenue SE, drawing multiple police vehicles and officers in riot gear to the area.  KCRG
  • A Cedar Rapids woman admitted on Tuesday to stabbing and killing her boyfriend, Anthony Fitts, and pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter while she remains in Linn County jail (her sentencing is set for June 13 at 1:30 p.m. with a potential 20-year term that includes parole).  CBS 2 Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids Community School District will cut 27 central office jobs at its Educational Leadership and Support Center by June 30 to save about $1.66 million annually and close a $12 million budget shortfall. The cuts—mostly through attrition and unfilled vacancies—are part of a realignment that will continue until June while classroom programs remain unaffected.  CBS 2 Iowa

  • A renters' rights workshop was held Tuesday night by the Oak Hill Jackson Neighborhood Association at the downtown public library to show tenants how to use legal protections amid housing code violations, including recent placardings by Cedar Rapids inspectors—experts from Iowa Legal Aid, the Civil Rights Commission and the SAFE-CR program explained reporting procedures and retaliation safeguards.  CBS 2 Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Luke’s Auxiliary donated $250,000 to St. Luke’s Foundation for Club 520, a peer-run mental health group offered through the Abbe Center that helps adults with mental health and substance use challenges. The program will relocate later this year to 615 5th Street SE to continue its community services.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • University of Iowa Health Care unveiled its new 469,000 square foot hospital in North Liberty on Friday at a ribbon cutting— the facility focuses on orthopedic care and includes a walk in clinic, emergency room, pharmacy, laboratories and a modern physical therapy center.
