  • Dogs Forever, a Cedar Rapids rescue, will run its 'Poorly Drawn Pet Portrait' fundraiser from May 1 to May 7, inviting pet owners to submit a photo, their pet's name, and payment details. Portraits will be delivered digitally by volunteer artists and cost $15 for one pet with an extra $10 for additional pets (owners must print the image themselves).  KDAT

  • Monday, a judge added 50 years to North Liberty man Asante Walker-Garcia Adams's century-long sentence for breaking into homes and raping women in 2022 and 2023; he will face trial in June for allegedly robbing, kidnapping and assaulting another woman in Center Point — details that add to the case's serious charges.  KCRG

  • Johnson County is renovating a 15-unit apartment complex on Hollywood Blvd to ease the local affordable housing shortage—modeled after Cedar Rapids’ 'The Heights' that helped residents transition from homelessness. County officials said they are seeking a nonprofit to manage the complex for people with very limited incomes.  KCRG
  • The Linn County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Drug Enforcement Agency on Saturday—offering a free prescription drug take-back event at 310 2nd Avenue SW from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help safely dispose of expired drugs and prevent misuse.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Iowa's top prosecutor proposed a constitutional amendment to let traumatized witnesses, such as children or those with disabilities (as designated under the proposal), testify outside the courtroom instead of facing the accused. The Iowa House passed the measure last week and the Senate approved it in March, and lawmakers will vote again in 2027 or 2028 before it goes to the public in November 2028.  KCRG
  • House lawmakers advanced a bill that would let psilocybin be used in supervised settings for treating PTSD. The bill would allow Iowans 21 and older to try the treatment under expert care—this measure now heads to the Senate for further review.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Four masked men from a white supremacist group marched in Marion on Saturday carrying an Aryan flag and distributing flyers with a hateful message—police watched without making arrests.
