  • Trees Forever celebrated Earth Day on Tuesday by planting 100 trees along Cedar Rapids' right of ways with guidance from staff who showed proper planting techniques—75 local volunteers helped in two sessions in the Ellis Park area.  CBS 2 Iowa

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids Fire Department responded on April 22nd at around 3:15 a.m. to an apartment building in the 1000 block of Memorial Drive Southeast when someone burnt food—neighbors smelled smoke in the hall and a few residents evacuated, but no injuries were reported.  KCRG

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local business RAYGUN now sells three t-shirts designed by local kids from a contest held on March 8 at NewBo City Market STEAM Saturday—one shirt shows a dragon, another shows a rocket ship, and the third shows a T. rex. Adult shirts cost $24.95 and kid shirts cost $20 at the Cedar Rapids store at 1028 3rd St SE.  KDAT
  • Texas Roadhouse in Cedar Rapids is relocating to its new site at 2425 Edgewood Road SW this week. The expanded location will offer seating for 110 more guests, add 50 new employees, enlarge the kitchen, and provide 70 extra parking spots.  KCRG

CRIME NEWS

  • Alicia Rogers, mother of 21-year-old Myron Snyder Jr., said her pain remains as strong as the night her son was fatally shot while delivering food on October 5—Cameron Leonard was sentenced to life without parole in Cedar Rapids.  The Gazette
  • Cameron Leonard was found guilty of first-degree murder for shooting 21-year-old DoorDash driver Myron Snyder near Pointe Apartments in October 2023 + he is now serving a life sentence without parole.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ongoing construction work will close a part of 42nd Street NE from east of River Ridge Road to west of Blue Jay Drive starting Thursday — the work will last about 10 weeks until July 3. Drivers will follow a detour on Edgewood, Glass and Blue Jay Drives while local access to Wells Fargo remains open.  The Gazette
  • Gov. Reynolds signed a disaster assistance bill into law Tuesday that directs $11.6 million to housing recovery, property cleanup and disaster preparedness after severe storms and flooding in spring 2024. The law also extends tax exclusions for housing developers, adjusts insurance rules and speeds emergency funds transfer while creating a new loan fund (Safeguarding Tomorrow Revolving Loan Fund) for long-term resiliency projects.  CBS 2 Iowa

  • ThriveNow will open a recovery center at Silvercrest Place in Iowa City today to help people with substance abuse disorder. The facility, the organization’s second location, will host a ribbon cutting and open house at 11 a.m. — it has also partnered with local hospitals to support treatment.  KCRG
