- ➤ The Cedar Rapids Freedom Festival has announced four Tribute to Heroes honorees—recognized for their service, courage, compassion and leadership. They will serve as Grand Marshals on June 28 and be honored at a ticketed breakfast held at 8 a.m.—a free flag raising ceremony follows at 9:15 a.m. on July 1. KCRG
- ➤ Since 2014, the ASPCA has rescued over 22,000 animal victims and helped with seven dog fighting cases that rescued almost 350 dogs while warning that neglect—such as not giving enough food, water, shelter or vet care—is a form of abuse. During Animal Cruelty Awareness Week from April 21-27, the organization urged everyone to report suspected cruelty to local law enforcement or animal control. KCRG
- ➤ Cedar Rapids is preparing for its annual 1-Bag Challenge to fight litter and beautify neighborhoods. - ➤ The Cedar Rapids Community School District has revised its bond proposal to cancel plans for a new middle school and instead spend $117 million to renovate four schools—McKinley, Wilson, Roosevelt, and Kennedy. - ➤ The Iowa House passed a bill 82-11 on Wednesday to remove sales tax from toilet paper (and other household items) with the law set to take effect on July 1 if signed, and the bill now moves to the Senate for review. KDAT
- ➤ A special election has been called for House District 78 in southeast Cedar Rapids to fill the vacant seat left by Sami Scheetz, with early voting available until 4:30 p.m. today at the Linn County Election Office on 823 3rd St SW and Election Day set for April 29 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Legislators are reviewing bills on property tax reform, health care system funding and unemployment insurance—proposals that the Economic Alliance is monitoring to support community priorities.
