COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids Golf will host an open house at Gardner Golf Course (5101 Golf Course Road in Marion) on April 29 from 1 to 3 p.m., showcasing a remodeled clubhouse, expanded pro shop, and improved practice facilities for local golfers to enjoy.  CBS 2 Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids School Board voted Monday night to close six school buildings due to funding shortfalls, restructuring the district's education system and converting three schools into intermediate centers for fifth and sixth graders. Starting Tuesday, parents can apply for a permit to select their child's new school.  KCRG
  • Horizon Science Academy will open a new Cedar Rapids campus at Radiant Church (3233 Blairs Ferry Road) in August. Enrollment is now open for 185 K-5 students.  KCRG
  • Enrollment at community colleges nearly rebounded to pre-pandemic levels as more students gain hands-on training tied to local job needs, a state report shows. Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids offers small, focused classes where students receive direct industry experience (including in construction and health care).  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 107 Iowa National Guard soldiers will be welcomed home Thursday around 2 p.m. at the Iowa Army Guard Armory in Cedar Rapids — additional troops will return later due to travel logistics as they conclude their deployment in Operation Inherent Resolve.  KCRG
  • A stretch of Interstate 380 faces changes this week— the Highway 30 ramp on southbound closes overnight from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday nights, with traffic detoured via Wilson Avenue Southwest. Southbound lanes will shift at mile marker 16 starting tomorrow and remain through fall.  KWWL

HEALTH NEWS

  • City officials extended the boil advisory for parts of the city after dirt and gravel entered the water main, causing bacteria risks in areas along Eighth Ave SW, 10th Ave SW and Ninth St SW between Eighth and 10th. Repairs are ongoing — an update will be issued Tuesday morning.  KWWL
  • CDC data shows that emergency room visits for tick bites are increasing across Iowa, as warmer winters let ticks thrive (leading to longer active seasons). Health agencies advise local residents to take precautions and check themselves and pets after outdoor activities.  KDAT

  • Hawkeye Downs Speedway is launching a new 'Juice Box' youth racing league for children ages six and under at Tuesday Night Titans races starting in June (participants must bring their own Radio Flyer Ultimate Go-Kart) to offer safe, fun motorsports for local families.  KCRG
