- ➤ CR Midnight Smoker BBQ moved into a new 3,500-square-foot space at 301 F Ave NW after 2.5 years at NewBo City Market. Owner Greg Stoll spent $1 million to add seating for 90 and plans live music to start this weekend — the restaurant now uses live fires to smoke its meats as part of its fresh, expanded setup. - ➤ Donnie White, a 51-year-old man from Cedar Rapids, pleaded not guilty in Linn County court on Monday after he was charged with beating Brittany Hopkins, a pregnant woman found dead on Feb. 28 with head injuries—he was arrested in Las Vegas and now faces first-degree murder and nonconsensual termination of a pregnancy charges along with a right to a speedy trial. - ➤ On February 26, a Marion man was arrested in Cedar Rapids after driving at 100 mph on 1st Avenue and striking a Chevy that injured an 18-week pregnant woman—Merylin Bowden suffered a broken pelvic bone and broken ribs and her pregnancy was terminated. KCRG

- ➤ GasBuddy's survey shows Iowa gas prices increased by 4.8 cents in the past week to an average of $2.98 per gallon — prices that remain 6.3 cents lower than last month and 26.5 cents lower than the same time last year. - ➤ On Monday, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced that the department invested $5.7 million in 14 urban water quality projects across Iowa, including one in West Des Moines that will add rain gardens, native plants, and a stormwater wetland at Legacy Woods Nature Sanctuary to filter stormwater before it reaches Jordan Creek and Raccoon River. - ➤ The Cedar Rapids Community School Board met Monday night to review a revised $117 million bond proposal that will fund renovations at four schools (McKinley Middle, Wilson Middle, Roosevelt Middle, and Kennedy High) while dropping a plan to build a new middle school outside city limits. The board will vote on May 12 and the measure will appear on the November 4 ballot, and homeowners with $200,000 houses would face a tax increase of about $7.47 per month (or roughly $89.60 per year). - ➤ On Monday, Cedar Rapids landlord Brigitte Toingar appeared in court for five hearings over four properties that do not meet city code, including two residences on B Ave NE and 86 Aossey Lane that is uninhabitable plus two commercial spaces in a Northwest strip mall housing a Dollar General and a pet store. The court fined her $100 per violation for a total of $1100, which is separate from more than $20,000 in fines she already owes while repair deadlines remain unmet. KCRG
