  • Eastern Iowa Honor Flight launched its 54th mission on Tuesday, taking veterans to Washington, D.C. for visits to memorial sites and a wreath dedication at Arlington National Cemetery — the flight departed before 7 a.m. from Eastern Iowa Airport and returned around 9 p.m. — a 'Welcome Home' celebration with a military band and local first responders marked the emotional homecoming.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • ConnectCR broke ground Tuesday morning on the Alliant Energy LightLine pedestrian bridge that will connect the NewBo and Czech village neighborhoods over the Cedar River. Project leader Steve Sovern said the nearly $15 million project will be mostly complete by the end of the year—providing a safer route for cyclists, walkers and runners.  KCRG

  • Donnie White—accused of killing 38-year-old Brittany Hopkins in February on Westdale Drive Southwest and arrested in Las Vegas—is pleading not guilty to charges of first degree murder and nonconsensual termination of a pregnancy.  KCRG

  • Halestorm and Lindsey Stirling will headline a concert at Alliant Energy PowerHouse on Sept. 24 as part of the nEVEREST Duality Tour with tickets going on sale Friday, May 2 at 10 a.m. The event will begin at 7 p.m.—Apocalyptica will open the show while Halestorm promotes its upcoming album release.  CBS 2 Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 1,300 high school students from 55 eastern Iowa schools attended the Build My Future event at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids + Future Builders of Iowa showcased trade careers such as roofing, plumbing and bricklaying. Several colleges on site explained A.C.E. careers + shared details on training and potential earnings.  KCRG
  • Mid-Prairie High School Senior Elden Kahler was named KCRG-TV9 Student of the Month for April for his kind spirit shown through encouraging sticky note messages and community outreach. Despite missing about a week of school each month for chemotherapy for metastatic testicular cancer, he stays active in programs and plans to study culinary arts at DMACC — a sign of his strong determination.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Linn County settled a lawsuit by paying $150,000 to former legal assistant Bonnie Waller, who alleged sexual harassment and retaliation after her firing from the County Attorney’s Office in July 2023—county officials said the settlement would save taxpayers from expensive litigation. Her personnel record will be amended to show a voluntary resignation.  CBS 2 Iowa
