- ➤ Officer Chris Hennessy returned early from a nearly year-long deployment in Syria and on Thursday afternoon was escorted by police to All Saints Catholic School (he is one of 107 National Guard soldiers coming home) where he surprised his two children at an assembly. KCRG
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The district hosted a 'Take the Wheel' event today at a controlled course to let community members test drive a full-size bus as they search for new drivers. Officials said the effort comes ahead of fall changes like school closures and adjusted bus routes. KCRG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A construction project to build a new roundabout and flood control system closed F Avenue between 1st and 4th streets and G Avenue at 1st Street since Friday. Detours run on 1st Avenue while an alternate route via E Avenue will open in about three weeks. CBS 2 Iowa
- ➤ House File 2297 heads to the governor’s desk to require passive radon mitigation systems in new homes, set to be enforced by the state building code and take effect July 1 to lower cancer risk from radon exposure. KCRG
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ State officials said pseudorabies did not spread after the virus was found in a small herd of hogs yesterday in central Iowa; tests confirmed only five boars from Texas tested positive and the affected hogs (fewer than 100) will be destroyed. Radio Iowa
