  • Willis Dady Homeless Services got a $100,000 grant from the Cedar Rapids Rotary Club after 50 local businesses voted for the Grand Impact Grant + the funds will help expand its mattress recycling programs. The grant will keep the environment cleaner + create new jobs for people in need.  CBS 2 Iowa

CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded before 9:00 p.m. Sunday night on the 4200 block of 21st Avenue SW in Cedar Rapids—treating a 32-year-old woman for a non-life threatening injury and a 35-year-old man, who has been charged with assault and harassment, for gunfire; both are expected to recover.  KWWL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Social Security Administration released its annual baby names list showing that Olivia and Liam remain the most popular names nationwide, while local hospitals in Eastern Iowa reported 2024 favorites such as Charlotte for girls and Henry for boys. Unity Point Hospitals in Des Moines also shared names like Lilian and Luca, reflecting regional trends in baby naming.  KDAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids School Board approved a revised $117 million bond referendum Monday night that will fund renovations at Kennedy High and three middle schools—homeowners are expected to pay about $7.47 per month. Community members now must gather signatures to place the measure on the November ballot.  KWWL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Iowa DNR conservation officer Nate Carr advised boaters to check that life jackets, a fire extinguisher, and a horn are in good condition before launching their boats as warmer weather brings more people to the lakes and rivers. He stressed that children under 13 and jet ski riders must wear life jackets at all times and warned boaters not to operate under the influence — ensuring safety on the water.  Radio Iowa

  • The Iowa DNR is reviewing public input on hunting and trapping regulations after receiving detailed feedback on deer, furbearers, and upland species—staff will hold public meetings May 19—May 21 and release proposal details in June with final rule changes set for July and scheduled to take effect in 2026.  Radio Iowa
  • Lawyers for four University of Iowa international students said in federal court that ICE first canceled their F-1 status on April 10 and later revoked three visas, prompting a temporary restraining order against detention or deportation; the students’ attorneys argue that ICE’s restoration of active status in the SEVIS record (which is not fully visible to school officers) leaves them at risk under its new grounds for termination (visa revocation and failure to maintain status).  KCRG
