- ➤ A Johnson County non-profit teamed up with Newbo City Market and Field to Family to plan a new community grocery store called The Market Basket in Cedar Rapids. Officials say construction will begin after a September groundbreaking — the store is expected to open by late spring or early summer 2026. KDAT
- ➤ A new guide for summer 2025 shows local readers a full list of upcoming events—concerts, comedy shows, festivals, fairs and farmers markets—in Linn and Johnson counties in June, July and August, and it will help families plan fun outings during the season. KDAT

- ➤ Cedar Rapids police launched Operation Quickfind to locate 16-year-old Jordan Sanders and 17-year-old Colleen Myers, who were last seen on May 13 at 12:18 p.m. at 198 Oklahoma Avenue SW; Sanders is a 6'1" white male wearing shorts and a hoodie and Myers is a 5'4" white female in baggy clothes. - ➤ Travelers from Iowa and Nebraska are gearing up for Memorial Day weekend as AAA forecasts over 3.7 million regional travelers—an increase of 116,000 from last year and slightly under the 2005 record. - ➤ Senators passed a bill by a 27—22 vote that stops companies from using eminent domain for CO2 pipelines unless they clearly show a public use after several hours of debate. The proposal now goes to Governor Kim Reynolds’ desk for review. CBS 2 Iowa
- ➤ The House passed a bill on Monday that stops local governments from limiting fireworks on July 3, 4 and Dec. 31—an effort designed to let Iowans join celebrations for the nation’s 250th anniversary if Gov. Reynolds signs it. The measure, approved by a 51-39 vote, removes restrictions in cities like Des Moines, Ames and Iowa City—though some local officials, including those in Cedar Rapids, worry about public safety. KCRG
- ➤ Angel Ramirez was sworn in Tuesday morning at the state capitol in Des Moines after being elected last month to fill the seat vacated when former Representative Sami Scheetz became Linn County Supervisor—she is the first Latina in the legislature and now represents District 78, which covers parts of Cedar Rapids.
