Good morning, Cedar Rapids. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 16th of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than two dozen Cedar Rapids high schoolers spent 11,000 hours building a 3,000-square foot five bedroom, three bathroom home in Hiawatha to gain real construction skills. The project, now in its 53rd year, was featured at an open house on Thursday— the home is now for sale through Skogman Realty.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • City View Community High School will move this fall from its downtown Cedar Rapids site to the Linn County Regional Center in Hiawatha with a new head-of-schools leading daily programs—this change will boost dual enrollment by linking high school students with Kirkwood Community College courses. Iowa BIG will relocate into the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance—saving the district more than $100,000 and uniting programs for the upcoming school year.  The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa legislative session ended after lawmakers passed key bills to cut unemployment insurance taxes, provide paid leave for state workers, and fund opioid addiction treatment, while also voting on budget proposals. Governor Kim Reynolds now has 30 days to decide whether to sign the bills (the tax cut is expected to save businesses nearly $1 billion) and plans to address property tax reforms next session.  KCRG
  • Iowa lawmakers wrapped up their 2025 legislative session after nearly 20 hours of heated negotiations that stretched proceedings into a second day. A confrontation between senators Mark Lofgren and Dan Dawson on the senate floor — highlighting party tensions — preceded final agreements on a $9.4 billion budget and key policy measures.  KCRG
  • Animal Care and Control took in a nine-foot reticulated python—collected on Monday in Cedar Rapids—because owning the snake is illegal in Iowa and it must be held for at least five days under state law. Officials are coordinating with out-of-state organizations to ensure the snake receives proper care.  CBS 2 Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • Iowa lawmakers passed House File 972 to help reduce the rural doctor shortage by using $150 million in federal funds to create 460 new residency slots over four years—it nearly doubles the healthcare loan repayment fund to ease physicians’ student debt when they serve rural areas. The bill now awaits the governor’s signature and will begin supporting better local medical care soon.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Terra Hickey, a dentist at Center Point Family Dentistry (907 Bank Court), is accused of harmful practices such as not properly treating tooth decay which led to extractions in patients. The Iowa Dental Board settled the case by imposing a one-year probation, ordering remedial education and an ethics course, and a $1,200 fine (the investigation began in 2023).  KDAT
