COMMUNITY NEWS

  • AAA is launching its free Tow to Go service for impaired drivers in Iowa from 6 p.m. Friday, May 23 to 6 a.m. Tuesday, May 27 — the service sends tow trucks to move both drivers and their vehicles safely within a 10-mile radius and cannot be scheduled in advance.  CBS 2 Iowa

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Monday afternoon, firefighters arrived at around 2:30 p.m. to a Cedar Rapids home on the 1700 block of Timber Ridge Drive after a wood stove chimney caught fire — homeowners and pets evacuated safely though the house sustained major damage.  KCRG

CRIME NEWS

  • Three brothers (Christian, Pierre, and Azane) are scheduled to face trial on July 15 for charges including involuntary manslaughter, assault causing bodily injury, and false imprisonment after police said their 18-year-old sibling died last November on Roemig Street when he stopped eating and drinking following a restraint.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Iowa school districts can now form safety assessment teams that share student details with law enforcement—mental health professionals and social service agents—to better help students facing crises. Center Point Urbana is forming an internal committee to plan how it will work with local agencies under the new law.  KCRG
  • On Monday the Linn County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution urging Cedar Rapids Community School District voters to sign a petition for a bond referendum that would pay for school upgrades. The resolution supports a vote on November 4 and meets the law—requiring at least 25% of last election voters to sign the petition.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Linn County started a discussion at Monday's Planning and Zoning meeting about reopening a nuclear power plant near Palo to meet rising energy demands after the Duane Arnold Energy Center shut down (October 2020). Residents expressed support for nuclear energy and raised safety concerns while county officials said further meetings will shape draft codes before the next Planning and Zoning Commission meeting on June 16.  KCRG
  • Gov. Kim Reynolds signed a bill that will require Cedar Rapids and at least five other cities to disband citizen review boards that review police actions— the law takes effect Aug. 16th.  The Gazette
