  • As summer sets in, more cyclists are riding local roads and trails, and safety remains a top concern for Cedar Rapids riders. Cyclists urge everyone to stay alert, plan routes ahead, and ask drivers to slow down + watch for cyclists.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Memorial Day mattress sales boosted donations to Cedar Rapids nonprofit Willis Dady Homeless Services’ recycling program—launched in January to create jobs for those facing homelessness—by increasing mattress contributions that help employ 11 part-time workers and divert 90% of the material from landfills. The program is on pace to process 2000 mattresses this year as recycled parts are sold to manufacturers to produce new products.  KCRG

  • Three people were arrested after an early Sunday morning fight on 2nd Avenue Southeast in downtown Cedar Rapids for disorderly conduct—police also investigated a nearby shots fired incident that left no victims.  KCRG

  • Downtown Cedar Rapids quiet zone work nears completion after an eight-year project to reduce train horn noise—only the crossing at Stickle Drive NE and C Avenue NE still needs work. City Engineer Ken DeKeyser said the city will apply for official quiet zone status when all work is finished, with an announcement expected this fall.  The Gazette
