ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • One person died after a single-car crash on 80th Street — just north of Fairfax as emergency crews closed the road between Beverly Road and Highway 30 to complete an investigation.  CBS 2 Iowa

CRIME NEWS

  • An Anamosa man was sentenced to up to 25 years in prison after pleading guilty to homicide by vehicle and OWI in connection with the deadly Springville crash in February that killed Dylan Vasick—he must also complete a substance abuse program and apply for a restricted license.  CBS 2 Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Senior Lillie Dostal of Cedar Rapids Washington High, the final KCRG-TV9 Student of the Month, recently graduated and plans to attend Creighton University for business and marketing. She earned 24 college credits, led a fundraising effort to help address a local food desert, and balanced her studies while managing ADHD.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nearly 2,000 Iowa National Guard members are deploying to the Middle East this week to support Operation Inherent Resolve—an effort to defeat ISIS in Iraq and Syria. The Guard is holding 24 sendoff ceremonies from today through May 30th—allowing families and communities in several cities to bid farewell to departing soldiers.  CBS 2 Iowa

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Save CR Heritage will purchase and revitalize the historic Zastera Pharmacy building in Cedar Rapids that had been underused since the 2008 flood. The nonprofit will convert the 1921 brick building into a storefront for vintage windows, doors, hardwood flooring and architectural salvage & community events, with a $100,000 pledge from the Hall-Perrine Foundation and a brick by brick campaign to raise the remaining funds by August 1.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Construction began today on the historic Coe-Paul house at 1316 Third Ave. SE in Wellington Heights to be renovated into two affordable housing units for refugee families—fundraising efforts and additional support are underway to complete the $490,000 project by the end of the year.  The Gazette
