- ➤ Two people were hurt and a driver was charged after a crash on Highway 30 near Bertram when Lindsey Clemens of Cedar Rapids took her eyes off the road around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday night—she lost control causing her car to roll onto its roof while another driver was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. - ➤ Authorities arrested 64-year-old Michael Schappert on Wednesday in Oregon, and he will be extradited to Iowa to face first-degree murder and premeditation charges for the 1983 killing of Ronald Novak in rural Linn County — DNA evidence linked him to the crime through samples found on Novak's clothing and a suspected hammer. - ➤ The Iowa National Guard held a send-off ceremony in Cedar Rapids on Thursday for soldiers of Charlie Company, 224th Brigade Engineer Battalion—family and friends watched as the troops prepared to head to the Middle East for Operation Inherent Resolve. - ➤ Old MacDonald's Farm in Cedar Rapids closed today after some goats showed signs of ORF — a contagious skin condition known as sore mouth that can pass to people.
