- ➤ Today, the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance is hosting the Farmers’ Market from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and several streets are closed from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.—including 2nd, 3rd and 4th Avenues SE as well as 2nd, 3rd and 5th Streets SE—and a no parking/tow away zone is in effect from 4:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., so visitors should use nearby ramps such as the 4th Avenue or Convention Complex ramps. - ➤ A caretaker named Sumaya Thomas has been charged with stealing over $6,700 from two dependent adults with intellectual disabilities in Cedar Rapids—police said she used their debit cards in March while acting as their caretaker and now faces charges that include theft, credit card fraud, and dependent adult abuse. - ➤ Cedar Rapids Police released crime statistics for January 1 to May 31 that show two homicides, aggravated assaults rising to 139 from 122 last year, and declines in burglaries and shots fired compared to five-year averages—while theft from vehicles reached 175 and vehicle thefts hit 98, slightly up from 2024 but still below average. - ➤ Developer Pedcor Investments finalized the purchase of 12.3 acres for The Atheneum — a 192 unit affordable housing project near Westside Library in Cedar Rapids that will offer one bedroom, two bedroom and three bedroom apartments for households earning no more than 60 percent of the median income with rents ranging from $970 to $1,350. The project will add a dog park, playground and clubhouse and will move forward if it secures Iowa Finance Authority tax credits this fall to support the new library's construction expected to open in late 2026.
