COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Eastern Iowa communities will host a series of 4th of July events + including parades, fireworks, live music and family activities in various towns with festivities scheduled from June 21 to July 12.  KDAT
  • Cedar Rapids began its Summer in the Square series yesterday in Greene Square—offering free weekday arts and crafts, fitness classes, live concerts, and food trucks through Aug. 15. The events are sponsored by Cedar Rapids Bank & Trust to bring lively summer activities downtown.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Marion Methodist Church’s FLY program is providing free sack lunches for Cedar Rapids and Marion students Monday through Friday from noon to 12:30 p.m. until August 22—pickup sites include Squaw Creek Mobile Home Park, Marion Village Mobile Home Park, Eagle Ridge Mobile Home Park, Chapel Ridge Apartments, Novak Elementary, Lindale Manor Mobile Home Park, Wilkins Elementary, and Francis Marion Intermediate School.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Eastern Iowa Honor Flight board members received the Governor’s Volunteer Award for their service honoring Iowa’s veterans; Lt. Gov. Chris Cournoyer presented the award to the all-volunteer nonprofit. Board President Lynette Voss said the accolade — given for flying veterans to Washington, D.C. since 2009 — shows the team’s hard work — which benefits local communities — and will help them keep serving.  KWWL

  • The Cedar Rapids Museum of Art opened a new exhibit called Strokes of Genius: American Impressionism and its Legacy on June 7 and it runs until September 14 — the show features early works and modern pieces that highlight the lasting impact of Impressionism and includes work by Iowa native Grant Wood.  CBS 2 Iowa

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Grocery prices are rising and Iowa shoppers still have budget-friendly options available—Aldi operates many stores in Eastern Iowa while Trader Joe's runs two locations in the state.  KDAT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College Community is offering free breakfast and lunch to local children as part of a summer meals program running through August at four sites in Cedar Rapids; meals are served Monday through Friday on a first-come, first-serve basis with children allowed one breakfast and one lunch per day.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Hoover and Van Buren Elementary Schools will get new buildings designed by Shive-Hattery with construction set to begin in fall 2027 as announced at Monday’s board meeting. Each building is expected to cost $30 million — funding from the SAVE Fund covers the costs — and a $117 million bond measure endorsed by the Education Association will go to voters in November.  CBS 2 Iowa
