  • Four local heroes—John Thompson, Anne Dugger, Brian Eschen and posthumously Matthew Kunkle—will be honored at Cedar Rapids' Freedom Festival next month, serving as parade marshals on June 28 and being recognized at a breakfast on July 1.  The Gazette
  • Developers announced plans to build The Atheneum, a 192-unit affordable housing complex, next to the Westside Library project in Cedar Rapids.   • A Cedar Rapids construction worker died after being struck by a large piece of road construction equipment near I-380 and Wright Brothers Boulevard on Thursday at 2:15 p.m.—police confirmed the victim was declared dead at the scene.  KWWL

  • Local businessman Mark Walter, a Cedar Rapids native and CEO of TWG Global, has purchased the Los Angeles Lakers for $10 billion from the Buss family— he is also an owner of the LA Dodgers.  KDAT
  • A district court judge affirmed the state gaming license for Cedar Crossing Casino & Entertainment Center in Cedar Rapids after a competitor challenged the permit. The $275 million project includes 700 slot machines & 22 table games and will open late 2026.  The Gazette
  • Developers say the Cedar Crossing Casino will open on New Year’s Eve 2026 as construction begins this month with foundation work scheduled to start soon. The $275 million project will see exterior work this summer and steel erected by fall — officials note that interior work will follow in winter.  KCRG

  • Jason Daniels, a former Marion man charged with child sexual abuse, has his trial postponed for the 11th time—Linn County Attorney Nick Maybanks said he is using more frequent case management conferences—aimed at cutting delays and helping victims get justice.  CBS 2 Iowa

  • The Iowa Farm Bureau survey shows 80% of grocery shoppers worry that government rules push up food prices—47% express high concern, a rise since 2021. Consumers also seek locally grown food as a sign of trust in Iowa farmers.  KCRG

  • Students in Cedar Rapids are using summer break to learn about Juneteenth as part of the Academy for Scholastic and Personal Success—studying the day enslaved people in Galveston learned they were free after the Emancipation Proclamation.   • An Iowa judge rejected a lawsuit from Riverside Casino and the Washington County Riverboat Foundation that challenged the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission’s decision on February 6 to grant a gaming license to Linn County — the judge ruled the commission did not misinterpret the law or ignore the impact on Riverside Casino. Developers for Cedar Crossing Casino said construction is on track for opening by New Year’s Eve as studies show its opening will boost the state’s economy even as nearby casinos may lose millions each year.  KCRG
