COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Motorcyclists rode on Saturday in the 13th annual Bug Run hosted by Amvets Post 6, starting at Cassill Motors and making stops in Williamsburg, Chelsea and Van Horne before returning to Cedar Rapids to aim for bug splatters on a target—proceeds raised support local veterans.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Hundreds of pounds of food and sanitary items were donated to the Freedom Foundation at its Center Point Road event on Saturday, with over 500 pounds arriving in the first hour—Mary Seely said the donations will only keep the veteran food pantry stocked for about two to three weeks due to rising local demand.  KCRG

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A crash occurred in Linn County Friday night on Old River Road at Big Bend Road when a white Volkswagen landed in a ditch+ a juvenile driver was injured and taken to a local hospital with minor injuries while two other passengers refused treatment.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An Eighth Judicial District Court judge upheld the gaming license for Cedar Crossing Casino and Entertainment Center this week, allowing the Linn County Gaming Association plus investors to move forward with the $275 million project scheduled to open on December 31, 2026. The city will support development by integrating flood control and safety measures; F Avenue NW will rise over a levee and E Avenue NW will become two-way traffic+ a new roundabout will be built for easier access.  KWWL
  • The Cedar Rapids Police Department is helping the animal shelter deal with staffing shortages and more animals by hiring seven temporary and part-time workers + using a cross-department team to restore consistent hours and care. Police Chief David Dostal and Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell said the effort will ensure the shelter provides safe, compassionate care for the animals.  KWWL
  • City Manager Jeff Pomeranz announced that Iowa native Carrie Mardorf will start as Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Director tomorrow, looking after parks, recreation programs, and forestry + she worked with the National Park Service before. Mardorf was Superintendent at Vicksburg National Military Park + she will relocate to Cedar Rapids with her spouse.  KWWL

  • The American Red Cross offers heat safety tips for residents as high temperatures rise this weekend, advising everyone to drink water every hour and use cool places if their homes get too hot. The group warns that outdoor workers, children, and pets should take breaks because heat can lead to cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke (call 911 if symptoms appear).  KCRG
