COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cpl. Melvin Huff, an Iowa Falls native who died during World War II, was brought home by a plane from Dallas on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. as family and Patriot Guard Riders welcomed him. He will be laid to rest today at Union Cemetery — Governor Reynolds ordered flags to half-staff from sunrise to sunset — to honor his service.  KCRG
  • Earlier this month, the Cedar Rapids Downtown Farmers Market celebrated its 20th season by drawing over 200 vendors and tens of thousands of visitors from across Eastern Iowa—organizers say the biweekly event will run on the first and third Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. until noon through September.  The Gazette
  • Matthew 25, a local nonprofit, held its 10th annual Transform Week this week in Cedar Rapids with nearly 370 volunteers repairing homes in the Time Check and Taylor neighborhoods (37 projects were completed) and every morning volunteers gathered at 9 a.m. at the Groundswell Event Space to start work. Leftover funds will be pooled to hire skilled contractors after the week ends (free labor and supplies were provided by sponsors).  The Gazette
  • UScellular set a Guinness World Record by building a 507-foot, 8-inch mini golf hole in Downtown Cedar Rapids today. The free event at Plaza Park on Mays Island runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will feature fun games — including face painting, puzzles, snow cones and mural painting — plus the unveiling of a new huge Cedar Rapids sign.  KDAT

CRIME NEWS

  • Jodi Huisentruit, a news anchor with roots in Cedar Rapids who later worked in Mason City, went missing on June 27, 1995, and her case remains unsolved—police continue to follow new GPS tracking data linked to a person of interest while urging anyone with information to call Mason City Police.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids leaders worry that $56 million in federal funds for the new Eighth Avenue Bridge over the Cedar River may be at risk because of a name change from the Arc of Justice Bridge—though Congresswoman Ashley Hinson said funding remains secure—and construction will begin in 2027 with the bridge opening in 2030.  Radio Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tick season is at its peak and experts from Iowa State University advise families to wear long sleeves, use EPA-approved repellents (such as DEET) and check for ticks every 10 to 15 minutes while outdoors. The precautions help reduce the risk of diseases like Lyme, which ticks can transmit only after feeding for several hours.  CBS 2 Iowa
