CRIME NEWS

  • A Cedar Rapids man, Ronald Steans, was charged with domestic abuse assault on Monday after he held a knife to his wife's throat when he believed she was cheating.  KCRG
  • A sentencing date has been set for Karina Cooper—convicted of first degree murder for killing her husband Ryan Cooper, who was shot twice in the face in Traer in June 2021—and her sentencing is scheduled for September 5.  KCRG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Hiawatha along with the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance launched the MakeMyMove Greater Cedar Rapids program to attract remote workers by offering more than $5,600 in relocation incentives. Applicants must be at least 18, earn a minimum of $55,000 per year, and commit to moving their primary residence within six months, and selected candidates will receive local support & community connections.  Cedar Rapids Economic Alliance

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids Community School District (CRCSD) received a $900,000 Therapeutic Classroom Incentive Grant from the Iowa Department of Education to expand mental health services and create therapeutic classrooms for students, with funds set to be distributed this fall for the 2025-26 school year. The grant is part of a statewide initiative that will support over 150 students from pre-K through 12.  KWWL
  • Coe College has partnered with ATD Flight Systems to offer hands-on flight training for students who will start taking practical lessons this fall at Eastern Iowa Airport—meeting FAA standards and combining flight practice with aviation management courses—to help address the growing pilot shortage.  CBS 2 Iowa

  • An eastern Iowa adult tested positive for measles and visited several locations, including a daycare and a golf range in Cedar Rapids, while contagious last week — health officials released a list of sites visited — and ask anyone who may have been there to fill out a contact form.  Radio Iowa
