Good morning, Cedar Rapids. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Cultivate Hope Corner Store in northwest Cedar Rapids said it is losing money because it lacks the bulk deals that larger stores get and did not see enough foot traffic even after a door-knocking campaign. Nonprofit Matthew 25 runs the store with donor support and will build a new parking lot—an effort to help cover costs and keep it open.  KCRG

CRIME NEWS

  • Mario Nikprelaj, 23, of Nebraska appeared virtually from Linn County Jail Friday after allegedly fighting a flight attendant on a SkyWest flight from Omaha to Detroit that was diverted to Eastern Iowa Airport Thursday—Linn County judge set a $10,000 bond and issued a no-contact order as he faces multiple charges.  KCRG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha and Marion have joined with a national relocation company to launch a talent attraction program offering remote workers $5,000 and local recreation vouchers — the effort comes as the cities work to fill job needs with fewer young workers staying in the area. The program, funded by over $400,000 from the cities and taxpayer funds, had 30 applications by Friday with three households already accepting offers and is expected to boost the local economy by nearly $19 million over five years.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Union Community School District in La Porte City has partnered with ZeroEyes to add AI detection to its security cameras so that footage showing firearms is reviewed within seconds and gives exact location data—helping responders act faster. The district is spending $250,000 of existing funds over five years—an investment made to boost protection for students and staff.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids City Council will vote Tuesday to dismantle its Citizen Review Board due to a new state law that bans such boards in cities with a civil service commission. The board was created in 2021 after protests over George Floyd's murder but an investigation showed it could not review body camera footage + it had little power to hold officers accountable.  KCRG
  • Cedar Rapids was awarded $25 million for flood control upgrades along the Cedar River in northwest neighborhoods near the future Cedar Crossing Casino site—this grant will fund a new levee, a flood wall and gate at Union Pacific Railroad, and a raised F Avenue with a roundabout at First Street. City officials said the first phase will cost $7 million and construction will start by late fall to cut local costs on a $45 million project.  CBS 2 Iowa
