COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Save CR Heritage is holding a final fundraiser Saturday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. at the J.E. Halvorson home to secure the 100-year-old Zastera Pharmacy on Ellis Blvd NW and plans to use its local landmark designation to obtain grants and make repairs before the August 1 deadline — the group aims to create a space for community events and further projects. BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ House of Iron, a new gym in the former Strand Theater at 316 3rd Ave SE, opened on Monday, July 21 with state-of-the-art equipment, two cold plunge tubs, a sauna, locker rooms and a photo posing room—further work on the lobby and front exterior will finish in about nine weeks as part of a $31 million downtown preservation effort. - ➤ Quinton’s Bar & Deli is on the market at 450 First St. SW Unit 101 in Cedar Rapids for $400,000 as a turnkey package including the business, furniture, fixtures and equipment — the restaurant remains open and offers ample patio seating with views of McGrath Amphitheatre. The Gazette
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Two Cedar Rapids men are accused of stealing nearly $200,000 in copper wire—Travis Vomacka was charged last year after taking copper valued at $130,000 from a locomotive company, and Joshua Marak, who was already in jail for a probation violation, faced new charges after he was seen driving Vomacka’s truck to Mercy Medical Center in June while security footage captured both men stealing over $64,000 in copper cables from a construction site. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of Iowa professor David Miles led the TRACERS mission that launched on Wednesday at 1:13 p.m. as two satellites studied the Sun's and Earth's magnetic fields to help scientists predict space weather—research that may prevent GPS errors during solar storms. KCRG

A visit by the U.S. Department of Justice confirmed increased staff training in de-escalation and crisis response — a move that supports the district’s efforts following a 2022 settlement that banned seclusion. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Linn County Public Health opened a mobile measles vaccination clinic on Wednesday at Green Square Meals in Cedar Rapids to help fight rising cases by offering free MMR shots for everyone, including an extra early 'Dose Zero' for infants aged 6 to 11 months (the vaccine defends against measles, mumps, and rubella). Health officials urge those unsure of their shot history to get vaccinated and advise calling a doctor before seeking urgent care (the virus can linger in the air for up to two hours after exposure).
