EDUCATION NEWS

The program ended Friday with a closing ceremony — students also experienced postsecondary seminars and field trips that offered lessons not found in regular classrooms.  The Gazette

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, QTS officials confirmed that a data center construction site remained in full compliance with regulations after Fairfax Water Department raised concerns about 40 dewatering sumps. The company said each sump is decommissioned once work is complete — it is coordinating with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Linn County Public Health Department.  KCRG
  • A section of N Center Point Road in Linn County will close on Monday, July 28 due to a bridge replacement project that will finish in November+county officials say a detour will be provided to keep property access available.  KCRG
  • Iowa Senate candidate J.D. Scholten said that the GOP-backed 'Save Our Bacon Act' misses the mark by not addressing the corporate consolidation that has squeezed hog farmers over decades—he warned that the bill is merely window dressing for the real issues in the industry.  Radio Iowa
  • Roy Hesemann, Cedar Rapids utilities director, said water main breaks are common because aging pipes corrode and water hammers strain pipes; the city recorded 128 breaks last fiscal year with two visible along Collins Road. City crews repair breaks within four to six hours—keeping pipes pressurized to avoid contamination and ensure safe water.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Cedar Rapids officials and the Iowa DNR found 40 unpermitted temporary wells on a construction site near 76th Ave SW during site visits on June 24 and July 17—water withdrawals exceeded 25,000 gallons per day, prompting a notice of violation. Elder Corporation must fix its water use registration and monitoring by Aug. 4—while work on the QTS data center project continues.  The Gazette
