- ➤ Firefighters extinguished a fire in a semi-trailer that hit an overhead power line at a commercial loading dock in Cedar Rapids Thursday morning; the trailer and its contents sustained damage. KWWL
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A Cedar Rapids packaging plant (1061 Blairs Ferry Rd. NE) will close on Oct. 4 after about 100 employees were told on Aug. 5 that their jobs are being eliminated. Smurfit Westrock Co. said the shutdown is part of a series of closures that also affected operations in St. Paul, Texas, and Germany. The Gazette

- ➤ Andrew Shaw is accused of ordering a hit on Chris Bagley in 2018 and his trial has heard testimony from Bagley's wife and an alleged accomplice—detailing the victim's drug use, robberies, and Shaw’s taunting of the family—with the trial set to resume Monday. CBS 2 Iowa

- ➤ QTS Data Centers announced plans Friday for a new data center campus in Cedar Rapids that is set to become the largest economic development in the city's history with a $10 billion investment. The campus will cover 612 acres at the Big Cedar Industrial Center, include seven buildings, and create over 2,000 construction and permanent jobs—supporting local infrastructure and partnering with Alliant Energy for sustainable energy and community investments. - ➤ A new special on Iowa’s News Now recounts how the derecho that struck Cedar Rapids on August 10 caused long-lasting power outages, tree loss, and crop damage with winds of 100 to 140 mph. - ➤ On August 8, Cedar Rapids marked the five-year anniversary of the derecho that removed much of its tree canopy by planting a Bur Oak tree in Jones Park, and officials said the tree stands as a sign of community progress — the city has planted over 16,000 trees on public land and will work to reach its goal of 42,500 trees over 10 years with over one million dollars invested in recovery efforts. City Manager Jeff Pomeranz added that the recovery work will continue as the community rebuilds. Radio Iowa
- ➤ After summer rains helped plants grow too fast, Cedar Rapids reminded residents to trim bushes and branches that grow into sidewalks and alleys. Residents can submit a ticket—if they see overgrown plants on city property—to alert city workers and keep public spaces clear. CBS 2 Iowa
