BUSINESS NEWS

  • Construction on the Cedar Crossing Casino & Entertainment Center began this spring in northwest Cedar Rapids and more than $40 million in contracts have been awarded, with 96% going to Iowa companies—project leaders say the $275 million project will support 800 construction jobs and open on Dec. 31, 2026, creating 365 permanent positions while the city prepares new traffic and flood-control improvements around the site.  The Gazette
  • After a car crashed through the front of a Cedar Rapids donut shop last week, owner Kira Anthony quickly reopened Munchi Mochi on Friday—using a temporary wall and new doorway—to serve customers while awaiting full repairs. EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Iowa Department of Education finalized new guidelines to allow students who meet income requirements to receive free and reduced-price meals for the upcoming school year using the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Special Milk Program — and Afterschool Care Snack Program. Students who qualified under the previous program will continue to receive benefits for up to 30 days after the school year begins.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Trees Forever and Cedar Rapids are working to restore the urban canopy after a derecho in 2020 reduced the city’s tree coverage from 24% to 8% (the storm removed an estimated 670,000 trees); the ReLeaf program has planted over 20,000 trees so far and plans to plant 42,500 trees with further structural pruning to strengthen new growth.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ray Wolf, who retired after nearly 40 years with the National Weather Service, said DOGE cuts reduced daily weather balloon launches at 13 sites, which may make it harder to forecast severe storms. The service lost almost 600 staff members but is now hiring 450 workers, leaving many worried about managing extreme events.  CBS 2 Iowa

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • A Fareway Cooking Segment explains that sweet corn is a healthy and versatile summer food with one ear holding about 80 calories and 3g fiber—packed with antioxidants that support eye health.
