CRIME NEWS

  • The Iowa Department of Corrections is asking Cedar Rapids residents for help locating Joshua Bergen, a 31-year-old man convicted on burglary and injury charges (5′7″, 168 pounds) who did not report for work release on August 6 from the Lary A. Nelson Residential Center after being admitted in late July.  KCRG
  • Andrew Shaw is on trial for allegedly hiring men to kill Chris Bagley, with convicted associate Drew Wagner testifying that during the 2018 murder he overheard Shaw offer Blahnik ($10,000) to kill Bagley and the trial is expected to last through next week.  KCRG
  • Andrew Shaw’s trial continues in Linn County as a witness recounted the 2018 events when Chris Bagley was killed, with Shaw accused of hiring two men—Drew Wagner and Johnny Church—to commit the murder and Wagner blaming Church after a fight escalated that led to Bagley being buried in Wagner’s backyard.  CBS 2 Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today the Iowa Department of Education is offering an $850,000 grant to Iowa school districts and accredited nonpublic schools for computer science credentials—money that will help high schoolers earn technology skills—applications are accepted through IowaGrants.gov until September 30.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday morning, Cedar Rapids officials held a ribbon cutting at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library to mark the completion of a flood control project in the Czech Village area. The project now protects the area up to a flood height of 31.12 feet—part of a larger citywide system projected to finish by 2035.  KCRG
  • The westbound lanes of 3rd Avenue SE will close today for utility installation—detours are provided for westbound traffic while eastbound lanes stay open, with work expected to last two days.  KCRG
