  • Bread and Buttered Bakery opened in NewBo City Market on July 16 and offers a range of sourdough treats like cinnamon rolls, focaccia, cookies, and cakes made from scratch. Owners Nikki and Amber—who started baking during a weight loss journey—aim to serve a healthy twist on classic bakery items.  The Gazette
  • A Cedar Rapids food truck announced on August 19 it will open its brick-and-mortar restaurant at 4201 42nd St NE, with plans for a grand opening in September. Moy and Puchi Yescas left finance to launch their business and share authentic Mexican street tacos and breakfast options — more details will follow as the launch approaches.  KDAT

CRIME NEWS

  • Lawyers for Angela Prichard’s family appealed the dismissal of their wrongful death lawsuit against Bellevue police for not enforcing a no-contact order that might have kept her estranged husband in jail before her October 2022 murder — he was later convicted of first-degree murder — and the appeal is pending review at the Eighth Circuit.  KCRG

CULTURE NEWS

  • A mother-daughter team from South Moravia is leading hands-on folk art workshops at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library’s Alliant Energy Classroom (1400 Inspiration Place SW) starting today until Sunday. Participants will learn to paint bright Moravian and Slovak designs on clothes, wood, and other items while also seeing a sand-pattern demonstration as part of a cultural exchange.  CBS 2 Iowa

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Iowa named Daniel Khalastchi as executive director for its new Office of Writing and Communication last week—he will lead efforts to enhance writing education on campus. Khalastchi brings over 10 years of experience guiding writing programs and expanding student opportunities.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Iowa DOT is providing school bus safety tips for the upcoming school year, urging drivers, parents, and students to follow traffic laws when near buses. The guidelines recommend waiting 10 feet from bus stops and stopping for buses with flashing red lights — failure to do so could lead to fines and penalties.  KCRG
  • A state inspector said Cedar Rapids animal care and control center failed inspections on August 15th and 19th because a leaking roof and mold could hurt animals—city officials said a mold removal company began cleaning the center and three new staffers were hired with a plan due by September 2nd.  KCRG
  • The Linn County Board of Supervisors will discuss proposed zoning regulations for nuclear energy at three public meetings on August 25, August 27, and September 3—each meeting allowing public comments before and after the ordinance readings. The board will make a final decision on proposals that set application requirements, review procedures, and community agreement measures.  KCRG
