- ➤ Two new restaurants are set to open in the former Chrome Horse Saloon space at 1201 Third St. SE in New Bohemia in Cedar Rapids — Oddmama's Vintage Cafe will open this fall and Rhapsody is expected next spring — following the saloon's closure in September 2024. The Gazette

- ➤ A jury today may decide the fate of Andrew Shaw who is accused of hiring hitmen in the murder of Chris Bagley whose body was found in a Cedar Rapids backyard in December 2018—Shaw now faces murder, solicitation, and conspiracy charges after closing arguments. CBS 2 Iowa
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The 2nd Avenue Bridge will close today from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for pavement marking painting on the stretch between 1st Street E and 1st Street W in Cedar Rapids—parking remains allowed on the bridge. KCRG
- ➤ Cedar Rapids Animal Care and Control has addressed building issues flagged in state inspections on Aug. 15 and Aug. 19—repairs for leaks, ceiling damage, ventilation, humidity, and mold remediation are underway to meet a Sept. 2 deadline—while a third-party consultant will later review further improvements. - ➤ Boyson Road reopened Thursday after being closed for an extended period—while the northbound entry ramp remained closed until the end of October. The city said no full closures are planned during the 2026 construction season. KCRG

- ➤ Cedar Rapids pilot Peter Teahen—72—will lead a 37-day, 8,800 nautical mile flight around the Atlantic to raise $1 million for polio eradication, and he will join co-pilot Ed Galkin—89—from New Jersey with all funds directed to The Rotary Foundation as the Gates Foundation provides a 2:1 match; this flight follows Teahen’s previous effort that raised over $2 million for the cause.
