CRIME NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids Police say someone was stabbed at the Kum & Go on 32nd Street and 1st Ave late Sunday night at 9:30 p.m. with injuries not life threatening and no arrests have been made.  KCRG
  • The Pines Pizza and Pub is asking for help to identify a suspect who stole six empty kegs and a security camera worth about $320 earlier this month—he was seen wearing a mask with a distinctive cannabis tattoo on his back left calf and may be driving a Dodge Nitro.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Cedar Rapids police arrested 32 year old William Robert Atkinson (from Belle Plaine) on Aug. 22 around 8:00 p.m. on charges of first degree harassment, terrorism threats, false imprisonment, assault on law enforcement and marijuana possession after investigators connected him to multiple harassment cases involving courthouse officials and law enforcement, and he is held at Benton County Jail on a $50,000 cash bond.  CBS 2 Iowa

  • Nearly 60 years ago, a Cedar Rapids factory working for Collins Aerospace provided the radio technology that helped send Neil Armstrong to the moon. Former engineers recalled working long hours to ensure every part met the strict standards needed for the Apollo 11 mission.  KCRG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Teachers in eastern Iowa marched in Mount Vernon and Lisbon this weekend to demand more public school funding as new vouchers become available for every student—raising concerns that essential supplies and programs, including adaptive tools and arts classes, may be cut. The teachers warned that reduced funding could leave students with fewer resources in classrooms that already support special education needs.  KCRG
  • At Maple Grove Elementary, third-grader Nora Christensen raised $350 by hosting a banana stand to buy a Buddy Bench for recess. She said the bench will offer a spot for friends to connect—an idea inspired by a similar bench at her teacher’s former school.  KCRG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Eastern Iowa Health Center opened a new pharmacy last week in Cedar Rapids that uses automated dispensing and video translation to help residents after a local pharmacy closed—creating new access to care. The center will add an urgent care clinic this fall and a vision center in January to further support patients.  The Gazette

  • MLB will return to the Field of Dreams site in Dyersville when the Minnesota Twins face the Philadelphia Phillies in 2026—marking the third regular season game at the historic site since 2021.  KCRG
