ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, a barge started sinking on Cedar Lake and leaked petroleum products; the Cedar Rapids Fire Department (CRFD) and Linn County Regional Hazmat Team contained the leak using floating booms, and cleanup teams will arrive today.  CBS 2 Iowa

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cafe Beignets—a popular Downtown Farmers Market vendor—has started moving into Lindale Mall’s food court this fall and will begin serving customers on October 1. Fans can try their treats one last time at the Cedar Rapids Farmers Markets on September 6 and 20 before the new stand opens.  KDAT

CRIME NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids police launched Operation Quickfind to locate 59 year old James Martin who was last seen at the Hall-Perrine Cancer Center on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m and is described as a 6 foot 1 man with dementia wearing jeans and a flannel.  KCRG
  • On Tuesday, a shots fired incident near 4th Avenue and 16th Street SE delayed Johnson STEAM Academy dismissal by nine minutes—Cedar Rapids Police confirmed no injuries.  KCRG

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Authorities responded to a petroleum leak at Cedar Lake after a contractor’s pontoon boat failed at 855 Shaver Road NE — the Cedar Rapids Fire Department deployed ladder and hazmat units and is working to contain the spill with booms.  KCRG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids City Council voted seven to one Tuesday to adopt plans for a new off-leash dog park at Jones Park that will cover nearly ten acres at a cost of $1.8 million. The project includes dog play areas, new access roads, parking and storm sewer upgrades and will have its construction contract awarded this fall with the park opening in fall 2026.  The Gazette
  • Cedar Rapids City Council advanced an $1.8 million plan to convert the old Jones Park Golf Course into a dog park—construction will begin this fall and finish by spring.  KCRG
  • On Tuesday, the City of Cedar Rapids and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers cut the ribbon on the completed McLoud Run section of the flood control system that now includes a new flood wall and a portion of the Cedar Valley Nature Trail—improving access for fishing and recreation along the Cedar River. Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell said the project makes the community safer and better prepared for future floods.  KCRG
  • Phase 2 of the 1st Ave. W and I-380 Southbound Off-Ramp Intersection project starts today in Cedar Rapids. Two westbound lanes on 1st Ave. W between 5th and 3rd and two eastern lanes on the I-380 southbound exit ramp will be closed for about two months—detours will be posted.  CBS 2 Iowa

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Tuesday, more than 100 Eastern Iowans gathered in Cedar Rapids to share their struggles with high prescription drug costs at a town hall. Rob Burgess from Americans for Pharma Reform said stronger regulation—like ending direct-to-consumer ads and using favored-nation pricing—could lower costs as the tour moves on to Michigan, North Carolina, and Georgia.  CBS 2 Iowa
