COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members of Radiant Church in Cedar Rapids are wrapping 480 presents in September to send to soldiers at a National Guard base in the Middle East so they have a piece of home by Christmas. Linda Smith and Karen Osenbaugh help organize the gift wrapping—each has a personal tie as their husbands served.  KCRG

  • The new Salsa Guy Cafe (opening September 4th at 7:30 a.m.) on Blairs Ferry Rd will welcome customers with a drive-thru, larger space, and extended hours for breakfast and lunch. It will continue the popular menu that began at the downtown farmers market and will add a fresh chapter to the brand.  KDAT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Iowa drivers see relief at the pump as the state average now sits at $2.84 per gallon, a 4.5-cent drop from last week and 15 cents below last month—making prices nearly 25 cents cheaper than this time last year.  CBS 2 Iowa

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ICE officers blocked access around the Department of Homeland Security office in Cedar Rapids today as protest organizers planned a rally to support three immigrant families during their check-ins—demonstrators are barred from the building’s lawn and alleyways amid rising concerns over attacks on ICE agents.  KCRG
  • Iowa native Brandt Snakenberg, who left 30 years ago for Texas and now teaches in Des Moines Public Schools, returned on his own as the state works to reverse its brain drain—Cedar Rapids launched a relocation program offering over $5,600 in incentives to attract remote workers. Mayor Tiffany O’Donnell said affordable housing, safe neighborhoods, and strong schools are key to retaining residents while a survey found that salary and cost of living drive out-migration.  KCRG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Peter Teahen of Cedar Rapids is flying across the Atlantic today to support polio eradication and reach a $1 million goal; he and his co-pilot Ed Galkin—a long-time Rotary Club member—will travel 37 days with stops in 11 countries and have already raised $100,000.  The Gazette
  • Dr. Orozco of Emplify Health by Gundersen warned Iowa parents today to avoid buying gummy supplements that look like candy when children are in the home—children may consume too many and need emergency care. He advised that adults use pill or tablet forms to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning.  Radio Iowa
