COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids Public Library Foundation received a $3.5M gift from the Busse Foundation to end its $10M Inspiring Big Dreams campaign — funding a new westside Busse Branch that will double the current library's collection and meeting space. A dedication ceremony for the 40,000-square-foot branch will be held when it opens in 2026.  KWWL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On September 25, a crash blocked southbound I-380 near North Liberty at Exit 4-Penn Street and caused a 19-minute delay for drivers, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation.  CBS 2 Iowa

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The huge new Fun Station in Cedar Rapids is almost ready to open and will announce its opening date next Wednesday—its over 70,000 square foot park will offer 22 attractions and replace the old site, which closes on October 5.  KDAT
  • The Iowa Restaurant Association named nine Corridor women to its 40 Women to Watch list, honoring leaders in the restaurant and hospitality industry from Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Coralville and North Liberty, including Ande Long, Heather Thompson and Kaitlyn Koranda—recognizing their growing impact on the sector.  The Gazette
  • Kum & Go stores in Eastern Iowa will close for about three days to rebrand as Maverik, with the chain beginning its changes today in some regions. In Cedar Rapids, the stations at 30 Four Oaks Drive SW, 3132 1st Ave NE and 1420 Mt. Vernon RD SE will shut on November 1st or 2nd and reopen on November 5th or 6th—these dates mark the local rollout of the new brand.  KDAT

  • Iowa soybean farmer Warren Bachman warned that China halting U.S. soybean purchases due to new tariffs may lead to a farm crisis if conditions do not change soon—farmers could suffer significant losses and need to find new markets.  KCCI

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Cedar Rapids Community School District broke ground on a new Van Buren Elementary School yesterday — the building will open in 2027 to replace the older facility and offer improved access for students — while learners continue at the current school on 29th Street SW.  KCRG
  • Today the ACLU of Iowa announced it will study how School Resource Officers in Iowa schools impact student safety and discipline, noting that their presence may lead minor issues to escalate into formal justice procedures. Cedar Rapids native attorney Jacob Sarasin will lead the study and its findings will be reported at the end of the school year — a move intended to expand toolkits for parents and students.  KCRG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Iowans are warned about a bug that can spread chagas— a dangerous disease that causes fever and a swollen eyelid— and experts say there are no outbreaks in Iowa yet while advising residents to clean raw vegetables and wear longer clothing to help prevent infection.  Radio Iowa

  • No Proof Required will hold its first alcohol-free Boos or No Boos event on Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at Old Neighborhood Pub where guests will enjoy non-alcoholic drinks + live music by Les Ohlhauser as part of the Sober October movement.  The Gazette

  • Former Hawkeye player and coach Dan McCarney will serve as honorary captain for the Iowa homecoming game on Saturday at Kinnick Stadium—he will join the captains at midfield for the pregame coin toss. The Iowa City native lettered from 1972 to 74 and later coached the Cyclones and North Texas.  KCRG
