COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Monday evening — parishioners at Maranatha Bible Church on the city's southwest side gathered to honor Charlie Kirk, who was murdered over two weeks ago. Speakers and a representative from Iowa Turning Point urged the community to carry forward his legacy of faith.  CBS 2 Iowa

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new Five Below store in Cedar Rapids—located at 3915 Westdale Parkway SW between Michaels and JC Penney—will open Friday, October 3rd at 9:30 a.m. The store will host a weekend celebration with extra giveaways on Saturday, including a $10 gift card and free drawstring bag for the first 100 customers.  KDAT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cedar Rapids will showcase its first statue inside City Hall after it was removed a year ago for repairs following vandalism — the project adds green paint and extra reinforcements and is expected to finish in six to seven weeks. This historic sculpture, originally installed in 1950 and moved in 2003, will be preserved in its new indoor home.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Today on National Coffee Day, a guide lists Eastern Iowa's top coffee shops from Google Reviews and includes Cedar Rapids favorites like Kismet Coffee and Bloom which earned a five star rating. The list shows shops in many counties with ratings of four point seven stars or higher — adding choices for local coffee lovers.  KDAT
  • Not Quite Brothers will perform Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre in Cedar Rapids, playing cover songs from the '70s, '80s and '90s and closing with Guns N' Roses' Sweet Child of Mine. The band members (including fraternal twins Sam and Isaac Johnson) grew up on classic rock that inspires their energetic live show.  The Gazette

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Iowa have dropped to $2.84 a gallon this week after falling by 9.3 cents—seasonal factors like the switch to cheaper winter gasoline contributed to the decline. They are 3.4% lower than last month and 15.1 cents lower than last year, GasBuddy said.  CBS 2 Iowa
  • Iowa farmers are starting to harvest millions of acres of soybeans while processing plants in Cedar Rapids prepare to turn the crop into animal feed—farmers say China halted purchases after tariffs, creating market uncertainty. Tom Carman of Carman Farms noted that even though the yield is good, the loss of their largest buyer means other countries must now fill the gap.  CBS 2 Iowa

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Sierra Club and environmental advocates voiced concerns during a virtual news conference about the planned restart of the Duane Arnold Nuclear Power Plant near Palo — citing potential health risks and environmental impacts. NextEra Energy said it aims to restart the plant in 2028 — a move that could generate revenue and permanent jobs if all safety studies and reviews are completed.  KCRG
  • Linn County Conservation and the Iowa DNR plan to hire a contractor this fall to repair shifted boulders on the fish ladder at Pinicon Ridge Park Dam in Central City—staff estimate the work will cost about $20,000 and help keep migratory fish moving upstream safely.  The Gazette

  • A former shelter manager filed a wrongful termination suit against the city after reporting mold and structural issues to a state inspector—attorneys seek her reinstatement with back pay while the city awaits an independent review of the case. The lawsuit follows multiple inspections and steps by officials to address staffing and repair problems at the shelter.  The Gazette
  • The Cedar Rapids School Board met on Monday to work on better internal and public communication – board president Cindy Garlock said the session aimed to make discussions clearer and keep the community informed. The board will share more meeting details by mid-week to help all stakeholders stay updated.  KCRG

  • On Sept. 23, patrons at NewBo City Market attended the Market by Moonlight fundraiser dinner where they chose from three curated menus—Latin, Asian, and Heartland—to support a nonprofit that helps local food vendors serve their dishes.  The Gazette
