- ➤ The Cedar Rapids Garden Buddy Program is asking volunteers to clear community garden plots from October 20-25—organizers will teach what to do so groups of up to 20 can help. No gardening experience is needed to join the cleanup efforts. CBS 2 Iowa
- ➤ On Oct. 11, Horizons will host its fourth annual Meals on Heels fundraiser at Olympic South Side Theater from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will include a shoe fashion show and an auction of 14 pairs of decorated 1960s go-go boots with online silent bidding running until the close of the event. - ➤ On Wednesday at 8:30 a.m., demonstrators organized by Iowa City Catholic Worker and Escucha Mi Voz Iowa gathered outside the Cedar Rapids Department of Homeland Security and ICE office to help immigrant families during ICE check-ins. They said that recent detentions and a blocked public way — which they said broke a city rule — caused concerns as city officials looked into the matter. KCRG
- ➤ About 30 community members helped harvest all 300 acres of Neal Megchelsen's crops Wednesday using combines, tractors and semi trucks after he died on Sept. 20—his widow said the support honors his lifelong habit of helping neighbors. The assistance shows local solidarity in a time of loss. KCRG
- ➤ Cedar Rapids will host a Scarecrow Festival on October 18th at Hawkeye Downs to raise funds for hunger relief. The event features dozens of handcrafted scarecrows, over 150 vendors, and contests with ticket proceeds supporting Together We Achieve — a nonprofit fighting hunger in eastern Iowa. Radio Iowa

- ➤ NewBo City Market has named Scott Wilson its new executive director—he left his role with the Cedar Rapids Kernels after 14 years to lead expansion efforts that will add a mezzanine, vendor booths and indoor performance areas for community events. CBS 2 Iowa
- ➤ Mas Margaritas held its final Taco Tuesday at 588 Boyson Rd NE as it prepares to close so that Pregame Brew and Chew can take over the space starting October 7th. Pregame Brew and Chew will leave its current home at 3025 Mt. Vernon Rd—making way for a new restaurant, Casa De Ojos Locos, to open on the same day. KDAT

- ➤ Orchestra Iowa will hold its Masterworks II concerts this October — featuring music by Debussy, Bartók, and Beethoven — in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The concerts are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre — and for Sunday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at Voxman Concert Hall — as announced. CBS 2 Iowa

- ➤ The Coralville City Council approved a policy to install license plate reader cameras at intersections on First Avenue near Interstate 80, First Avenue near Highway 6, and Coral Ridge near Highway 6 despite concerns about data collection and privacy (Flock Safety cameras do not capture images of drivers or passengers). Two council members opposed the vote for wanting stronger data protections, and police will use the cameras only when checking arrest warrants or missing person reports. CBS 2 Iowa
- ➤ Traffic in SE Cedar Rapids is changing as crews extend a new water main to support the city's Water Pollution Control facility. A lane shift on Mount Vernon Road at Bertram Road runs from Oct. 1 until Oct. 14 — Bertram Road will be fully closed with a detour from south of Berry Road to north of Otis Road until Oct. 31 while work continues through April 2026. - ➤ Cedar Rapids firefighters trained on Wednesday for a trench rescue when they simulated a collapsing dig site that buried an excavation worker under 800 pounds of dirt — practicing shoring and debris removal to keep themselves safe. - ➤ Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Klimesh said discussions on the Summit Carbon Solutions pipeline were key to his election as leader—he noted his Senate team is now working on education and taxation while continuing the conversation to find a solution to the pipeline dispute.
